Iron is the metal that matters. Copper is useful, bronze is better, but iron is the backbone of civilization. It's the metal that plows fields, fells forests, builds bridges, and forges every other tool you'll need. Without iron, you're stuck in the Bronze Age at best — and bronze requires tin, which is one of the rarest metals on Earth. Iron ore, by contrast, is everywhere. It's the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. The challenge was never finding it. The challenge was always getting it hot enough.
A bloomery is the simplest device that can achieve this. It's a clay-lined shaft furnace, roughly waist-high, fed with charcoal and iron ore from the top and blasted with air from the bottom.
